JACKETS MISS PLAYOFFS FOR 13TH STRAIGHT YEAR
St. Martin's playoff drought is alive and well.
The Yellow Jackets lost to arch-rival D'Iberville 35-21 Friday night, when a win would have secured a playoff berth for SMHS. St. Martin hasn't made the state playoffs in 13 years, and also hasn't beat D'Iberville in 13 seasons as well.
The Warriors won the Region 4-6A title with the win, and will host Petal next week to open the Class 6A South State playoffs. St. Martin, which sat atop the league standings just three weeks ago, ends the season with three straight losses and at 6-6 overall and 3-4 in league play.
The Yellow Jackets were tied with D'Iberville 21-21 almost mid-way through the third period, but the Warriors secured the win with a 14-0 spurt to end the game.
St. Martin got a 3-yard scoring run from Ham McGee in the first half, and a 1-yard sneak for a score by quarterback Wayne Overman in the second half. The other SMHS score came on a 37-yard touchdown toss from Overman to Kalem Reddix.
D'Iberville running back Micah Booker finished with 26 rushes for 138 yds and and three touchdowns in the winning effort. The Warriors end up winning the Region 4-6A title in head coach Eric Collins' first year at the helm of DHS.
