GULFPORT 47, ST. MARTIN 16
GULFPORT, Mississippi – Two interception returns for touchdowns broke open what had been a close game and Gulfport went on to down St. Martin, 47-16, in the Region 4-6A opener for both teams Friday night at Milner Stadium.
Behind three touchdowns from quarterback Cade Crosby – two passing, one rushing – Gulfport overcame an early St. Martin lead to go ahead 19-8, but with about nine minutes left in the third quarter, ‘Jacket quarterback Patrick Greer hit Andrew Nguyen with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Another 2-point conversion pulled St. Martin to within three at 19-16.
But Crosby’s 2-yard TD run three minutes later increased the Admiral lead to 26-16 and, just moments later, Jamison Lindsey stepped in front of a Greer pass, intercepted it and brought it back 25 yards for a score. Then, with about nine minutes left in the game, Isaiah Washington picked off another Greer pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown.
Travione Smith would score the final Gulfport touchdown on a 22-yard run.
Greer finished 14 of 27 for 147 yards, while Kevin Fergunson led ‘Jacket runners with 21 carries for 94 yards and the first St. Martin touchdown.
St. Martin suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the region. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Hancock next Friday. Gulfport (3-2, 1-0) will travel to West Harrison.
