BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
Competition for a playoff slot is getting down to serious business along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. High school football teams kick off week 9 Friday night at 7:00 and some teams will try separating themselves from the pack.
Five teams are tied for first-place in the Region 4-6A ranks with 2 wins and 1 loss. George County, Biloxi, D'Iberville, Gulfport and St. Martin share the lead but with head-to-head games on tap, five teams won't be sharing first-place by the end of the night.
The St. Martin Yellow Jackets travel to Biloxi. The highly explosive Yellow Jackets have numerous offensive weapons with quarterback Wayne Overman pulling the trigger. He has passed for 2,242 yards and 28 touchdowns. Kalem Reddix is his go to receiver. Reddix has hauled-in 63 catches for 1,362 yards and 24 touchdowns. Reddix ranks second in the nation according to the latest MaxPreps.com statistics.
Biloxi has won back-to-back games, coming off an impressive 44-28 win against Ocean Springs. Junior quarterback Tucker Thomas has picked up his play and is a threat to run and throw the football. His top target in the passing game is senior receiver Tim Jones.
St. Martin head coach Eddie Wayne Whitehead said, "Biloxi is red hot. Offensively and defensively they're playing with a lot of fire. Tucker and Tim Jones are really special athletes. So, it's going to be a challenge for us."
Biloxi head coach Bobby Hall knows his Indians must play their best game to date. He said, "St. Martin has a lot of guys that make explosive plays. So, we need to do a really good job on keeping their explosive plays to a minimum and we need to make some.
