OAK GROVE DOWNS ST. MARTIN IN SCRIMMAGE

HATTIESBURG – The Oak Grove Warriors shined on both sides of the ball, as they took down St. Martin 21-3 in the exhibition game. John Rhys Plumlee threw for three touchdowns – two to Kevin Barnett and one to Kris Jones, and the defense nearly pitched a shutout if it wasn’t for an early St. Martin field goal. “I thought John Rhys missed a couple of throws, but for our offense, I thought we looked pretty good with our 1s in there,” Oak Grove coach Drew Causey said. On the first drive of the game, Oak Grove used screen passes to set up a long touchdown pass from Plumlee to Barnett. They missed on the first connection, but Plumlee and Barnett didn’t miss a couple plays later. “They were playing cover 3, so I was trying to look the safety off a little,” Plumlee said. “I looked him off and I was coming to the slot, but KB had the corner beat deep. You give it up to KB, he’ll go get it for you.” St. Martin returned the favor with a long drive, but the Warriors defense held strong to prevent a touchdown, only allowing a field goal. The Yellowjackets had something brewing two drives later, but a fumbled ended any hope for a score. In the meantime, Plumlee connected with Jones and Barnett on two separate wide receiver screenplays for scores. “Easy passes,” Plumlee said. “Just a bunch of athletes and let them make yards up.” Running back Orlando Simon was out for the jamboree, but Tyler Taylor, Andre Pittman and Southern Miss linebacker commit Hayes Maples played well at the position.
